In 234 B.C., after the first Punic War, Carthage, Africa had
chosen to send the general, Hamilcar Barca, to Spain to defend against
continued Roman aggression. After several major scrimmages with
the Roman army, Hamilcar's oldest son, Hannibal, arms himself
with 500 elephants and 500,000 agile warriors. During the dead
